Maybe it’s the pettiness inside me that’s still stewing, but after the grand tour, I take Clara and Jazzy to a smaller, more private amusement park, one which isn’t very popular—and I don’t tell Lance about it. My daughter takes one look at the place and makes her announcement.

“Stupendous!”

My brows shoot up at the word, and I turn to Clara, who’s already grinning.

“I think she means she’s never been to one of these before.”

Jazzy nods. “Yes, never.”

“And you?”

Clara shakes her head. “Nope. Never.”

I grin back, suddenly excited. “Then prepare for the best time of your lives, ladies.”

It’s an exaggeration, but not really. There are enough activities to suit both kids and adults, and we make the rounds and try every little game there is. By the time we’re ready for the rides, I’ve won two teddy bears for Jazzy and a stuffed puppy for Clara, which they eagerly carry.

Jazzy hates the go-karts, but she’s in heaven when we try out the carousel. She’s practically shrieking in joy when it stops and begging for a second round.

“Can we, please? I want to ride Strawberry.”

“Strawberry?”

“The pink horse, Dad.” She looks at me like I’m supposed to know that. I chuckle.

“Right. Strawberry. How about you and Clara ride it again?”

I take the prizes from Clara’s hands and watch as the two ride the carousel. Clara joins in with Jazzy’s outrageous laughter and it’s a sight to see. I love watching them, love that they’re enjoying this…and love the sight of them so much that I wish I could frame this forever.

Instead, I memorize it in my mind and tuck it inside me.

Hours later, the shrieking, giggling kid is knocked out in my arms, and Clara has to drive us back to my condo. When we enter, she takes in the place and shakes her head.

“You really were living the billionaire lifestyle, weren’t you?”

I shrug, no longer wanting to brag as much as I did earlier. It’s crazy that this place already feels strange to me, but I brush it off and put Jazzy to bed first in my guest bedroom, where she only sits up for a change of clothes before she snuggles with her teddy bears. I take a quick shower, then head to the living room.

Clara’s showered, too, wearing a floral pajama set that has me laughing. She blushes.

“I didn’t know what to wear.”

I wink. “You can wear nothing.”

She rolls her eyes, then yelps when I scoop her up in my arms.

“Nick! What are you doing?”

“Carrying you to bed, of course. Stop wriggling, sweetheart. You know how that makes me feel.”

She stops immediately, which is hilarious. When I place her in the biggest bed in the penthouse suite, I climb in with her and kiss her right away, remembering that I haven’t had my fill yet.

She sighs into the kiss, melting into me. Her arms wrap around my neck and her body yields, a softening that never ceases to humble me. We sink into the moment, my hunger increasing with every second that I get to taste how delicious she is.
